課程目標
In this course we are primarily interested in the role of financial intermediaries that arise between ultimate borrowers and lenders. Banks, the intermediaries that take deposits and make loans, are of particular importance not only because of their long time dominance in the entire financial system but also of their nature of intrinsic instability.
In this semester, we will first study origination of money, the financial markets, interest rates, and the Efficient Market Hypothesis. Then we analyze the role of financial intermediaries in the framework of asymmetric information and the impact of financial crises to the aggregate economy.

In the second semester, we start with the analysis of banking regulation.
Due to the potentially enormous impact of bank runs, panics, and financial crises on the economy, the financial industry is heavily regulated. We will discuss the influence of regulations on the development of financial markets. In turn, we will learn how the financial regulations had evolved in face of fast-growing financial innovations. Finally, we will discuss how the central bank controls the supply of money and uses available tools to achieve the desired goals, the monetary transmission mechanisms, and how the public reacts to changes of monetary policies. We will also study the role of real estate markets and the stock markets in the transmission of monetary policies and whether the central bank should react to the fluctuations of these asset prices.
